Daniel Fitzgerald

First night back,
Deer in the headlights.
Red light washed face,
Keeping this sterile.
My love, sleeping soundly.
Please be safe.
Strung up between two trees,
Floating above three of regret.
2AM, no luck made.
Home flung together.

Just before dawn,
Light rubbing sleep.
I couldn’t hear it
But my nose knows.
Fog blanket,
Lonely and strong.
Didn’t cry,
Waves washed with fear.
Teeth ground down,
Jaw & heart broken.
Struggle with waves,
Fought with all I have.
Until I let them carry me home.
It smells like you.
